Micky Staten wears a few hats within his filmmaker persona. Micky is a Writer-Director, Cinematographer, and Stills Photographer. The New York native is not only well versed in the technical aspects of cinema, he is equally skilled in the art of forming relationships and leading people to act as one. He asserts this mentality is carried over from his ball playing days. He’s known as a natural born leader, a voice of reason, and a savvy craftsman. Micky’s journey is that of a floor general. From the hardwood to Hollywood. From one love to another, Micky uses passion as his fuel to drive home success.
Micky has earned a stellar reputation among colleagues on many Hollywood film and television sets as a charismatic and determined crewmember. He’s garnered these experiences from working in the AD Dept as a production assistant, and then in the Camera Department as a camera assistant. Those positions afforded him the opportunity to work on projects like “The Watcher” (Netflix), “Severance” (Apple TV), “Iron Mike” (Hulu), “And Just Like That” (HBO), “SVU” (NBC), “The Equalizer” (CBS), and “Retreat” (FX).
Prior to his Hollywood experience Micky was a run and gun videographer and documentary filmmaker. His first exposure to formal film production education was at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS where he received a B.S. in Media Studies. All these aforementioned involvements served as necessary precursors to the filmmaker he is today.
Micky considers himself a purist in the art of motion pictures. He likens his directing style to Spike Lee meets Reginald Hudlin, and his DP style to Mallik Hassan Sayeed mixed with Charlotte Bruus Christensen. Micky has a burning desire to tell the stories that are important to the culture of America’s historically disenfranchised, people of Moorish descent. Micky proclaims that one of his driving forces to do what he does is to be the change he wants to see in the industry.
